DUI is a design blog filled with articles and information. Despite the name, this is not your local AA.

Man are the days and weeks flying by. It’s already nearing Thursday (thanks to how late I just posted today’s DUI) in the middle of August is fast approaching. Just thought I’d share my thoughts on a bunch of random things today, something I’m calling Bits and Pieces. Not everything will be design related, but you should enjoy it anyways.

Bits and Pieces

OlympicsOlympics
How many of you have been watching the Olympics? I’ve been watching various events here and there as much as I possibly could. As it stands right now at the moment I write this, the United States leads the medal count with 29, while China (currently in second with 27) has the most golds at 27. I’m interested in getting to know the audience a bit more (and hopefully inspiring the long-lost art of commenting around here which has been lost for a little bit), so to you faithful DUI reader, what is your home country and what event(s) are you most interested in?

Taking on Revenue without any substance?
One of my favorite design galleries - CSSRemix - appears to be no more. The site hasn’t been updated in nearly forever, but yet it continues to accept new advertisers. So as the money keeps rolling in, the site remains stagnant. I find the practice pretty unfair, especially to advertisers who may have been caught up in the site’s activity dropoff. I myself purchased an ad about two or three months ago, and I believe it was shortly after that the site became dormant. Gallery sites are visited for two reasons: (a) To submit your own site and get free promotion or (b) to look through other sites and gather ideas and inspiration. When a site doesn’t update for a while - especially a site which is fully dependent on being constantly updated and active - the visitors do drop off, and the advertisers in turn suffer. Is this practice right or wrong?

Entertainment watch: Tropic Thunder
The movie about a movie that wasn’t actually a movie wasn’t all that great. Being touted as the funniest movie of the summer, Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder failed to do it for me. As I big Ben Stiller fan I was expecting a lot more from the movie, especially considering that it contained a star-studded cast. I didn’t find that much of it to be very funny, and I was rather disappointed. Most of the funny part you see in trailer, which doesn’t make them nearly as funny when you see them happen because you already know what’s coming.
