One question I get asked a lot is if there is really a need to take out a virtual private server solution or will a standard shared hosting account suffice for running a website. It seems that lots of people out there do not know which package is best for their site. To answer this question is difficult as the kind of package you require really does depend on what you’re looking to host? If you’re looking to host a small website with virtually no real traffic and you don’t require any of the more advanced administration features that come with VPS hosting packages then you’re probably better off keeping your money in your wallet and taking out a shared hosting plan. If however, you’re a developer or are looking to host a website with significant traffic / usage then you should really be considering a VPS or even a fully blown dedicated server.
If you’re somewhere in the middle then the VPS might be the ideal option for you. With a VPS, you get all of the advantages of a dedicated server such as command line access and reboot control but for a much lower price than that of a dedicated server.
